Governor on Increase in COVID Cases — In his Thursday press conference, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine addressed the state’s large increase in COVID-19 cases.

The governor said he did not believe, and no analyst he has spoken to believes, that the increase is due solely to an increase in testing. He added that hospitalizations are also up.

Almost 60% of cases statewide are in the 20-49 year old range. He added that the average age of people infected in March was 51 and that so far in June, that number has decreased to 42.

“This is, in essence, the highest number we have had,” the governor said, adding that other record high days have been attributed to an increase of testing in prisons.

“As we look at this problem, there’s two things we can do. One is more testing and more tracing,” he said, “and another thing of course what we do out there: washing our hands, wearing a mask, keeping a distance, basic things that we have been talking about.”

On Wednesday, newly-reported COVID-19 cases in Columbus increased by 66%.
